Sump Pump Basics
HOW DOES A SUMP PUMP WORK?
Understanding how a sump pump works is key to appreciating its importance. Our systems include:
-
Submersible Pumps: Designed to operate quietly and efficiently beneath the water surface in your sump pit.
-
Automated Switches: Ensure that the pump activates automatically at the correct water level.
-
Discharge Lines: Equipped with a 4” pipe and a pop-up drain emitter to direct water safely away from your home.
Groundwater from below the basement floor flows to the sump basin using gravity. When enough water has been collected in the basin, the automated float switch turns the sump pump on. This water is pumped through our PVC discharge line to the exterior of the home. From there, the PVC discharge transitions into a buried 4” drain pipe to a distance at least 10ft away from the home. At the end of this buried discharge we install a round pop-up drain emitter. This emitter opens when in use, and automatically closes to keep out debris and animals. As an added convenience, the drain emitter can be mowed and landscaped over without removal. By utilizing a 4” drain pipe we eliminate the possibility of freeze ups in the winter months.
THE HEART OF THE SYSTEM
West Michigan Waterproofing has chosen a 1/2hp cast iron submersible pump for our installations. This pump has proven to be very reliable and powerful, along with having a quiet operation. The float style is a simple and robust vertical style that requires no maintenance. West Michigan Waterproofing warranties the pumps for 2 years.

-
Can wall stabilization be done in any weather condition?Weather conditions can affect certain stabilization techniques, especially those involving external excavations or cementitious materials, that require dry conditions. We plan our projects to coincide with appropriate weather conditions to ensure the integrity and effectiveness of our work.
-
Will wall stabilization increase the value of my property?Yes, effectively implemented wall stabilization not only ensures structural integrity but also enhances the property's market value and appeal by mitigating future risk of damage and the associated repair costs.
-
Are there any signs I should watch for that indicate my wall needs immediate attention?Signs that require immediate attention include visible cracks that widen over time, walls that begin to bow or bulge, and evidence of moisture penetration, such as damp patches or mold. If these issues are observed, it's crucial to consult a stabilization expert promptly.
-
How do I know which wall stabilization technique is right for my property? The appropriate technique depends on several factors, including the type of walls, the extent and nature of the damage, soil characteristics, and environmental conditions.
